The Yggnis Project
GameMakerThis is a game prototype, still in development. It's a 2D RPG with turn-based combat.
Story
The player controls Alice, a young girl with horns who lives in an orphanage. In the first part of the game, the goal is to find the other children and help them.
Later, the player can explore new areas, such as a magic academy, and will have to uncover the mysteries of this world.
Gameplay
My goal is to create a classic RPG, inspired by my favorite titles (Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, Pokémon).
However, I'd like to make combat more dynamic by adding mini-games that affect how effective attacks are (in the style of Undertale, Bug Fables, Mario & Luigi).
I'm trying to keep the game relatively small in scope, so I can release a playable demo soon.
Development
I'm building the game with the GameMaker engine. I chose GameMaker because it's a complete engine focused on 2D, so it's lighter and simpler than engines like Unity for this type of game. GameMaker can export to Windows, Linux, Mac, consoles, smartphones and HTML5.
The game is programmed in GML, an object-oriented language inspired by C++.
Graphics
The game initially used 16x16 assets, but we switched to 24x24 during development. It's a less common resolution, but since 24 is a divisor of 1920 and 1080, the game can be upscaled to 16/9 without any issue. Pokémon Mystery Dungeon on Game Boy Advance uses the same resolution, on a 240x160 screen.
All assets were produced specifically for this game, by me and my friends Thomas and Léo.
